The house of Hades

A series of paintings that tell the tale of a trip to the underworld, based on the Greek myth of Hades, god of the underworld, but translated to the here and now.

Hades, god of the underworld in Greek mythology, was the central subject of a series of remarkable works by Anna. The house of Hades has become her visualisation of the pernicious world of which she has regularly been a part, both actively and passively, during her life. The clash of the titans symbolizes the inner struggle between reason and emotion, will and ability, power and powerlessness. The piece The Hellhound (Cerberus) shows the transgressing emotions in which one can loose oneself if the beast gets the upper hand.

Mercy is the representation of Persephone. After being abducted by Hades as a young girl and having accepted his gift, she had to become his wife. In the myth she divided her life between the upper world and the underworld.

The works of this series do not only relate to the symbolic world described in Greek mythology, but also show the aspects we are confronted with in the world we live in today: psychoses, excessive sex, violence, the omnipresent field of tension between good and evil, heaven and earth, power and powerlessness.
